— Harrison County Schools Director of Safety and Discipline Jason Snider, who has made a smooth, successful transition from a career as a lawman.
— World War II veteran Carl Hull, who passed away recently at age 103. After serving 26 months in the Pacific for the 82nd Signal Battalion, Hull worked for the Penn Line Service for several years before spending time as an electrician for a mining company.
— Sgt. James Castro, Spc. Jason Hall, Staff Sgt. Kyle McKay, Senior Airman Max Howard, Sgt. Shaquille Bullock and Pfc. Isaiah Castellanos, who earned prestigious awards during the recent West Virginia and District of Columbia Army National Guard and West Virginia Air National Guard Best Warrior Competition held recently at Camp Dawson.
— South Harrison High School senior Bennett Luo, one of 625 semifinalists in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
— The ProStart Teams from Marion and Monongalia counties, which have advanced to the National ProStart Invitational.
— Longtime Harrison County employee Nate Critchfield, who kept the Courthouse Plaza clean and greeted visitors with a smile and friendly words.
— High schools throughout West Virginia, for recognizing signings for the military and other post-secondary school commitments. In the past, such recognition often was just limited to athletes inking scholarship commitments.
— WVU students Austin Braniff, Kara Cunningham, Megan Weaver, Ashley Martsen-Poulin and Courtney Glenn, who have been named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows.
— Fairmont State University, for deciding to offer courses for current law enforcement officers through its Police Academy instead of serving as a basic training facility.
— The South Harrison High School Future Farmers of America program, for again opening its two greenhouses for public sales of flowers and vegetables. The South Harrison FFA has 250 students.
— State officials, for moving West Virginia’s National Hunting and Fishing Days event back to Stonewall Resort State Park in Roanoke. The event is set for Sept. 21.
— The Fairmont State University Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center, which will host the Wartz ‘n’ All Dulcimer Jam from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4.
