South Harrison senior Bennett Luo is one of 625 semifinalists for the Presidential Scholars Program. He was chosen from a field of over 6,000 initial candidates.
LOST CREEK, W.Va. (WV News) — Bennett Luo, a graduating senior at South Harrison High School, has been named one of 625 semifinalists in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
The semifinalists were selected from over 6,000 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2024.
Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 60th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors, officials say.
Scholars are selected on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas — academic and artistic success, accomplishment in career and technical fields, leadership, strong character, and involvement in school and the community.
A distinguished panel of educators reviewed these submissions and selected the 625 semifinalists, officials said.
The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 citizens appointed by the president, will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May, who will be presented with a Presidential Scholars Medallion, officials say.
