WEST UNION, W.Va. (WV News) — It didn’t take long for Makenna Curran’s college decision to be forged: It’s the Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania for the Doddridge County lefty ace.
“I just went to a practice there and first thing I felt comfortable, immediately,” Curran said. “The coaches, obviously, and the girls were really nice. I just felt at home when I was with them. I knew that it was the place I wanted to go.
“It feels really nice. I’m glad to have the support of my teammates and my friends and family. I’m happy for the next step.”
Curran said Cal reached out after seeing her stats.
“They invited me on a visit and I went from there,” Curran said. “Before junior year started, I was like, ‘You know, I want to keep playing softball for as long as I can.’”
Curran was a second-team all-state selection as a junior and an honorable mention pick as a sophomore, hurling the Bulldogs to the sectional championship and regional finals.
“I think we just get along really well. I have a good team behind me. We’re a very talented group,” Curran said.
Curran expects to pitch for the Vulcans, but wants to improve her hitting as well.
“I stay calm throughout the game,” Curran said. “I think my mental game is what makes me good.”
Curran’s arsenal also makes her effective.
“I throw a bunch of movement pitches,” Curran said. “I definitely throw my rise a lot.”
It’s been a lifelong pursuit.
“My mom introduced me to softball. She put everything in my left hand from a young age and she’s the one who started me pitching,” Curran said. “And my pitching coach has been with me the whole time.”
Curran will major in biology, pre-med.
“They have an osteopathic school at Lake Erie, so I want to go there,” Curran said.
