BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WV News) — Carson Currey tossed a two-hit shut out as Bridgeport claimed a 1-0 victory over University in high school baseball Wednesday night at Bridgeport Athletic Complex.
Currey was making his first start of the year with him being used mainly as a reliever, and he definitely made the most of it going the distance giving up two singles, striking out nine while walking only one and hit one batter.
“Just an awesome performance from Carson and we use him primarily as a reliever, but we gave him the start and he did very well,” Bridgeport coach Robert Shields said. “He threw plenty of strikes walking only one batter against a very good University team.”
The game was an excellent pitchers duel between Currey of Bridgeport and University starter James Bryner. Bryner was equally impressive going five shut out innings to get a no decision giving up five hits with three strike outs and no walks.
“James pitched very well and we also made some good defensive plays behind him,” University coach Brad Comport said. “It was an excellent pitched game by both pitchers and hats off to Currey for the way he pitched.
“We did not hit the ball very well or had very many good chances to score. This was just what it was a pitchers duel where one run would be good enough to win.”
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Bridgeport (20-3) pushed across the only run of the game against Hawks reliever and losing pitcher Brodee Latocha.
Dylan Duvall led off with a single to left and Sam Romano was brought in as a pinch-runner. Mark Biafore hit a slow roller to third base that muffed for an error to put runners on first and second.
Grant Lively laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Romano and Biafore up one base to second and third with one out. Rowan Michaelis came to the plate and after fouling off several pitches hit a 2-2 pitch into right field for a sacrifice fly deep enough to score Romano from third base to put the Indians up 1-0.
“That was a good at-bat by Rowan to get the run home and we got some bunts down when we needed to,” Shields said. “But, we flied out to much and we must get the ball on the ground or on a line more than we did today.”
The Hawks (12-13) had two runners on base in the top of the seventh against Currey as Mason Chaney and Max Cash was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
But, Currey was able to get University’s final hitter of the game to fly out to center field to end the game and record the complete game shut out victory.
Over the first five innings of action, Bridgeport had the best scoring chances in the game. The Indians got singles from Brody Pierce and Kasen Baun in the first inning to put runners on second and third with one out. But, Bryner was able to record a strike out and Hawks centerfielder Wenkai Campbell made a great catch on a flyball when he fell down and still made the catch for the third out of the inning.
The Indians had another opportunity in the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and second base after singles by Ashton Curry and Michael Romano. But, Bryner again got out of the jam getting two fly ball outs and struck out the last hitter to end the inning.
University had a chance to break the scoreless game in the top of the fifth inning as Riley Anderson reached base on a error and Duke Seggie walked to put runners on first and second.
But, Currey was able to strike out the next Hawks hitter to end the threat.
