GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WV News) — Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin says that a vehicle pursuit temporarily closed SR 7 in the Kanauga area of Gallia County on Thursday evening resulted in the arrest of one man.
Champlin says that deputies were alerted to a vehicle pursuit that was traveling southbound on SR7 in Meigs County heading toward Gallia County. The pursuit was initiated in Washington County by law enforcement officials conducting an investigation into the trafficking of narcotics. Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office pursued the vehicle through Washington, Athens, Meigs and eventually into Gallia County, where they were joined by troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Champlin says that Gallia County deputies set up spike strips on SR7 just south of the bowling alley in the Kanauga area to disable the vehicle prior to entering Gallipolis. This action resulted in the driver of the vehicle, Odell Ladell May, age 30 of Akron, attempting to turn around and then colliding with two cruisers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which disabled his vehicle.
One of the Washington County deputies received minor injuries as a result of the collision.
Champlin says May was taken into custody and booked into the Gallia County Jail on active felony warrants and fleeing and eluding a police officer. Prosecutor Jason Holdren’s office is being consulted regarding additional charges that may result from this incident.
“I would like to thank all the law enforcement agencies involved that brought this pursuit to an end and Mr. May to justice. Once again, this incident shows how our region’s law enforcement agencies work together for the common good of all of our citizens,” Champlin said.
