The West Virginia Rivers Coalition is preparing to take legal action against The Chemours Company FC LLC. The company is accused of breaking the Clean Water Act. It is said they put harmful PFAS chemicals into the Ohio River. These chemicals came from their Washington Works facility.
The Clean Water Act has specific rules about what can be put into water. The company didn't follow these rules. Even when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) told them to fix it, they didn't.
The coalition has given Chemours a warning. They have 60 days to fix their mistakes. If they don't, the coalition will take them to court. The coalition could ask the court to make Chemours pay money and stop them from doing it again.
Chemours has said they want to be a good neighbor. They've put together a plan to reduce the amount of PFAS chemicals they put into the water. The EPA is looking at this plan now.
