The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS), Bureau for Medical Services (BMS) released data on the completion of the state's Medicaid program from April 2023 to March 2024.
During this period, 520,729 Medicaid and West Virginia Children’s Health Insurance Program (WVCHIP) renewals were processed. Of those, around 279,952 people were approved for coverage, while approximately 207,674 were not from April 2023 to December 2023.
Follow-ups for renewals from January 2024 to March 2024 are not yet available, and eligibility for renewals will be determined in the following months. Those ineligible for the programs will be transferred to the Federal Marketplace for an alternative plan.
Since the start of the COVID-19 public health emergency, Medicaid enrollment has significantly increased, with over 100,000 more people becoming eligible by March 2023. As of April 1, 2024, Medicaid enrollment was eligible for 516,500 people.
Additionally, WVCHIP enrollment saw a decrease in April 2023 but went up by March 31, 2024, due to the number of children from the Medicaid unwinding period.
