Fairmont State University Receives $31,000 Grant to Boost Science Literacy in North Central West Virginia through Elementary Earth and Space Science Workshop
Fairmont State University has received a $31,000 grant.
The West Virginia Department of Education provided this money. The goal is to make science easier to understand for people in North Central West Virginia. This will be done through a workshop.
The workshop is for teachers in elementary school. It focuses on Earth and Space Science. The NASA Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Education Resource Center is also involved. The goal is to make science a part of reading and writing lessons for K-5 teachers.
The workshop lasts for five days. Teachers will learn in groups based on their grade level. They will also have some classes together. Open Education Resources and Earth and Space Science materials will be given to teachers for their classrooms. Teachers will also get a stipend, or payment, for each day they attend.
Deb Hemler, who is in charge of the Natural Sciences Department at Fairmont State, said it's important to teach science every day. This is because elementary school teachers often don't have much time for subjects like science and social studies.
This is the second year of the workshop. Changes have been made to improve the quality of the lesson plans teachers create.
