SHINNSTON, W.Va. (WV News) — The Lincoln boys swept Notre Dame, 7-0, while the Irish girls pulled out a 4-3 victory in high school tennis action on Wednesday evening.
For the Cougar boys in singles, Ty Merrill beat Christian Arnold, 8-1; Damian Shaw defeated Cameron Harley, 8-1; Alex Ramsey dispatched Jake Quinlan, 8-4; and Devin Zimmerman blanked Andrew Cochran, 8-0.
In doubles, Merrill/Ramsey defeated Arnold/Cochran, 8-1; Shaw/Devin Zimmerman took care of Harley/Lewis, 8-0; and Braxton Zimmerman/Dessiyon Hatchett beat Jack Stalnaker/Quinlan, 8-2.
On the girls side, Notre Dame took the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches as Austyn Paugh defeated McKenzie White, 8-5, and Emily Besten blanked Emma Ash, 8-0.
The Cougars got the singles split as Jaden Harbert outlasted Piper Fryer, 9-7, and Alexis Efaw took care of Francesca Reed, 8-2.
White/Harbert beat Paugh/Besten, 8-5, in No. 1 doubles, but Fryer and Lexi Shaffer teamed to defeat Ash and Efaw, 8-3, in the No. 2 spot and Reed and Brayden Paugh won 8-3 over Danica Gherke and Marissa Barajas in the No. 3 doubles flight to clinch the match.
On Friday, Lincoln visits Philip Barbour at 4 p.m., while Notre Dame hosts Grafton on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
SOUTH HARRISON 14, Braxton County 3 (F/5): The Hawks scored the final 14 runs, three in the third, two in the fourth and nine in the fifth, to turn a three-run deficit into a mercy-rule shortened win.
Dane Tate doubled and drove in three runs for SH, who had eight players in the lineup score at least one run.
Layton Wageman added two runs and two RBIs and Zane Harlow drove in a pair to back Seth Gain, who allowed an unearned run on three hits in four innings, striking out eight for the win, in addition to scoring two runs on offense.
Tate picked up the save with a scoreless fifth.
South Harrison (4-1) hosts St. Marys on Friday at 6 p.m.
ELKINS 7, Robert C. Byrd 6: Logan Frum’s two-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning gave the visiting Flying Eagles the advantage, but the Tigers clawed back in their final at-bat to take a in a back-and-forth game.
Elkins led 2-0 after one and 3-2 after two, then the Flying Eagles struck back with a pair in the top of the third to gain the edge only for the Tigers to hang two in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-4.
Frum had two hits and scored a run, while Ashton Shaffer and Xavier Carvelli drove in two apiece for RCB.The Eagles next head to Myrtle Beach for the week.
