BUCKHANNON — Seven West Virginia Wesleyan alumni and one state official will be recognized by the college on Oct. 11 as part of homecoming weekend.
Nicholas Hamisevicz, from the Class of 2004, will receive the Young Alumni Service Award. He is the director of research and academic affairs at the Korea Economic Institute of America and is responsible for issues impacting the United States-South Korea alliance.
Amy Thornton Jones, from the Class of 1998, will receive the Young Alumni Achievement Award. Jones is a dietitian, speaker and author on celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. She also facilitates the Logan County (Ohio) Celiac Support Group, which she founded in May 2010.
Chaplain Bruce Reed, from the Class of 1976, will receive the Alumni Achievement Award. A longtime minister in the area, Reed also has won a Bronze Star as full-time support chaplain to the West Virginia National Guard in Iraq. The retired colonel is presently the State Family Programs director for the West Virginia National Guard.
State Sen. Mike Ross will receive the Extra Mile/Friend of the College Award. Wesleyan is honoring Ross for his civic contributions and philanthropy.
Steve and Carolyn Renau Shepler will receive the Alumni Service Award. Steve Shepler, a 1970 graduate of Wesleyan, and Carolyn Shepher, a 1969 WVWC graduate, are being honored for their contributions to the college in funds and effort.
Avah Arbogast Stalnaker, of the Class of 1977, will receive the Alumni Achievement Award. She is the CEO of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital after working her way through the ranks, starting as a nurse.
Leon Thomas III, of the Class of 2005, will receive the Young Alumni Achievement Award. Thomas is a student success and retention adviser with the Student Achievement and Success Program at Anne Arundel Community College.
