CLARKSBURG — A 26-year-old is headed to prison for 10 to 25 years for second-degree sexual assault of a female child who was under age 10 at the time.
Christopher Lee Wilson of Clarksburg was sentenced to the maximum possible by Harrison County Chief Judge James A. Matish.
The judge also ordered the sentence to run consecutively with a term of one to 10 years in prison that Wilson already is serving for a break-in at Notre Dame High School.
Matish noted the two crimes were totally unrelated in deciding on consecutive sentences.
Matish also followed Assistant Prosecutor Traci Cook’s recommendation to impose 50 years of supervised release.
Alternative sentencing such as probation and house arrest weren’t even an option to request for Assistant Defender Keith Cox. That’s because Matish, at the plea hearing in July, ruled that Wilson used forcible compulsion.
The child’s grandmother said Wilson’s actions had wrecked the girl’s life, leaving her sleeping “with one eye open” and hurting her developmentally in many ways.
“I don’t think 10 to 25 years is long enough for him to get,” the grandmother said. “She’s going to have to deal with this for the rest of her life, along with every family member who has to be with her.”
Wilson apologized to the victim and to his family.
“I know what I done was wrong. I regret it every day,” he said. “When you’re in prison and you’re a sex offender, you go through hell every day. ... Sometimes I’d rather go out and be executed because of what I’ve done.”
Wilson will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. The defendant was just denied parole recently on the B&E charge. Once he finishes that sentence, either by discharging it or making parole, he will have to serve at least 10 more years before becoming eligible for parole on his sex-crime conviction.
