CLARKSBURG — Two children are dead after a tanker truck rolled over and crushed a passenger car on U.S. 19 near the Adamston section of Clarksburg Saturday night, according to Clarksburg Police Chief Marshall Goff.
The driver of the water tanker told police his truck’s brakes failed, Goff said.
The tanker’s driver was traveling on the eastbound off ramp of U.S. 50 and was attempting to turn onto West Pike Street when the truck collided with and flipped on top of a sedan, Goff said.
Two children in the back seat of the car were killed, Goff said. He said their ages could not be confirmed, but are believed to have been 7 and 8.
The driver of the car, the children’s mother, was taken to United Hospital Center, but she was not believed to have been seriously injured, Goff said.
The driver of the water tanker was also taken to UHC.
Officials with the Division of Highways and the Public Service Commission were on the scene late Saturday, in addition to officers with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and the Clarksburg Police Department.
Clarksburg Police Sgt. Mike Walsh and Sgt. Danny Messenger were conducting accident reconstruction, Goff said.
“It’s just a gut-wrenching scene down here,” Goff said. “Anytime you have children, it really takes its toll on you.”
