CLARKSBURG — A state prisoner convicted of murder has died from injuries suffered Monday in an altercation with another inmate at the North Central Regional Jail.
Jeron Hawkins, 19, had suffered severe head injuries in the beating that occurred as breakfast was winding down Monday in a section for more violent offenders.
About 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, The West Virginia Division of Corrections “was released from our custody of Jeron Hawkins at Ruby Memorial Hospital and the body was taken into custody by the deputy medical examiner of Monongalia County,” said Jim Rubenstein, commissioner of corrections.
The other inmate involved in the altercation, Anthony Young, used a mop bucket on Hawkins, state officials have said. State Police said Young suffered minor injuries, although his lawyer contests that. Young insists it was self defense.
State Police plan to present the case against Young in the death of Hawkins to Doddridge County grand jurors, according to 1st Sgt. Michael Baylous. They'll discuss the matter with Doddridge Prosecutor Brooke Fitzgerald first, but "more than likely we'll try to get a first-degree murder" indictment, Baylous said.
Young is awaiting federal sentencing in connection with a 2006 inmate slaying at the maximum security Hazelton prison in Preston County. He's been ordered detained pending sentencing.
